The Witness Within: Awakening to Your Soul Nature
Scripture: Luke 17:21 – “For indeed, the kingdom of God is within you.”
Genesis 2:7 (KJV)
7 And the LORD God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul.
Introduction: The Great Confusion
Brethren, look around this room. You see hands, faces, bodies. When you go home, you will look in a mirror and see a reflection. You have a name, a career, a history of pains and pleasures. You have been taught that this—this collection of memories and flesh—is who you are.
But I stand here today to tell you a dangerous and liberating truth: You are not your body. You are not your mind. You are not your resume, your regrets, or your reputation.
You are a soul having a human experience. And until you become aware of that soul nature, you will live like a millionaire who has forgotten he owns a fortune, begging for spare change on the street.
The Problem: Identifying with the Fluctuations
Why can’t we feel our soul? Because we are addicted to the noise. The soul is not loud; it is a still, small voice (1 Kings 19:12). The world screams. Your anxious thoughts scream. Your ego screams, “I am angry!” “I am broke!” “I am sick!”
But watch closely. Who is the one noticing the anger? If you can observe your anger, you cannot be your anger. The observer is always different from the observed.
When you say, “I am having a sad day,” who is the “I” that knows the sadness? That “I” is not sad. That “I” is the container for the sadness. That container—that silent, eternal witness—is your soul.
How to Become Aware: Three Practices
To become aware of your soul nature, you do not need to fly to a mountain top. You need to do three difficult things: Stop, Look, and Listen.
1. Stop Running (The Practice of Stillness)
The soul reveals itself in the gap between thoughts. Most of you have never experienced that gap. You wake up and immediately reach for your phone. You fill every silence with a podcast, a complaint, or a to-do list.
Sermon: For five minutes a day, sit still. Do not pray with words. Just sit. When a thought says, “You are bored,” watch that thought float by like a cloud. Do not grab it. In the silence beneath the thought, you will feel a presence. That presence is your soul. It has been waiting there your entire life.
2. Look at the Looker (The Practice of Self-Inquiry)
Try this right now. Close your eyes. Can you see your own face? No. You can only see the image of your face. You can see your hands, but you cannot see the eye that sees.
Ask yourself: “Who is aware that I am breathing?”
Do not answer with your name. Your name was given to you by your parents. Before they named you, you existed. That awareness that existed before the name, before the breath, before the world began—that is the Soul.
As the Psalmist said, “Be still, and know that I am God.” Notice the order: First be still. Then know. Then I am.
3. Detach from the Story (The Practice of Witnessing)
You have a painful past. You have a fear of the future. The soul knows neither. The soul lives in the eternal Now.
Try this exercise: When someone insults you tomorrow, do not react. Instead, internally say, “Ah, the body is hearing a sharp sound. The mind is labeling it ‘insult.’ The chest feels tight.”
Watch your own drama like you are watching a movie. The movie might be tragic, but the watcher in the cinema is never hurt. You are the screen, not the character on the screen. The screen remains pure even when a war is playing on it.
The Evidence of Awakening
How will you know you have become aware of your soul nature? You will stop being afraid of death. Why? Because the body dies, but the observer of the body never touched time.
You will stop needing constant approval. Why? Because the soul is complete; it does not need applause to exist, just as the sun does not need a flashlight.
You will love without condition. Why? Because when you see the soul in yourself, you cannot help but see the soul in your enemy. You realize there is only One Soul playing hide and seek in many bodies.
Conclusion: The Return
I am not asking you to reject your humanity. Love your family. Pay your bills. Laugh at the joke. But stop living on the surface.
You are not a drop in the ocean. You are the entire ocean in a drop.
This week, when you feel fear rising, whisper to yourself: “This fear is in me, but it is not me.”
When you feel pride swelling, whisper: “This pride is passing through me, but I remain.”
Go home and look into a mirror. Look past the wrinkles, the gray hair, the freckles. Stare into your own eyes until the physical form becomes blurry. What is looking back at you? That ancient, unborn, undying gaze.
That is Christ in you..
That is the Soul.
And once you have seen it, you will realize you have never been lost. You were only dreaming you were asleep.
Shall we pray!
